How to Love Your Body

In the last post, I was talking about how even though we all go through challenges in life, there are things that can make our lives easier and things that can make them harder. And one of those things is our response to anything that happens.

Our responses make sense. It’s the way we’ve always done things. It’s worked for us so far.

But if you’re not liking the stress that’s coming up from showing up this way to life’s challenges, I’d like to invite you to think about it a different way.

In the last post, I talked about loving your mind.

This post is about loving your body.

While there is much to be said about the body positivity movement and loving and accepting your body as it is, it’s much easier said than done at times.

Many times, in response to stress, it’s your natural inclination to turn to food to comfort you. Or to forget to eat altogether entirely. You might exercise harder or stop all movement. If you have a mindfulness practice, you might lean into it or abandon it.

None of these responses to stress is wrong or better than the other. They just are. They just exist. Your judgment of your response is what makes it “right” or “wrong” in yur mind.

If you’re going through something stressful, it’s so important to cue into your body. Listen to what she is telling you. If she says to rest, then rest. If she says to move, then move.

A wise friend once told me that our mind speaks to us through thoughts and our bodies speak to us through symptoms.

Once the stress is over, do you still have physical symptoms? Do you have an intentional practice of moving and caring for your body to get back to where you want once the stress has passed?

These can be easy, simple steps. Because if you’ve gone through a big challenge like a job change, a divorce, a diagnosis, or a relationship change, the last thing you need is to add unnecessary stress and guilt. Let your body guide you. Listen to her. Find ways to nourish her in loving ways. All you have to do is be still, place a hand on your heart, listen, and then follow what she tells you. Your body always knows the answer when you take a moment to ask her.

She’s been waiting for you to hear her.
